Isa si Jay-R sa mga celebrity na talagang pinaghahandaan ang future. Nakakaisang taon na pala mula nang magka-franchise siya ng Mini-Stop. Ang convenience store niya ay nasa kanto ng Wilson St. at P. Guevarra St. sa San Juan. "Maganda kasing business yung immediate needs talaga ng mga tao," sabi ni Jay-R. "Gaya ng pagkain, toiletries, everything seems to be available here na, kaya it's really good business. "Si Katya Santos ang nag-recommend sa akin na pasukin ko ang ganitong business. Pero, siyempre sa umpisa, gusto kong kumuha rin ng franchise ng Mang Inasal. Yun ang gusto kong isunod, at saka water filling station," aniya pa. Gusto sana niyang magkaroon ng Burger Machine pero sa pag-i-inquire niya, nalaman niyang wala palang franchise ang business na ito. "Okey sana ang Mang Inasal, pero sobrang mahal! Seven million pesos! Yung requirement kasi, kailangang may malaking area. Yung manpower nila requires 28 people. "Siguro, yung water station na lang ang isusunod ko. Hindi ko lang alam kung saan. Pero, gusto ko 'pag water station na, sarili ko na, hindi na franchise. Gusto kong gumawa ng sarili kong business." CHOOSY WITH ROLES. Usually, may pelikula siya tuwing filmfest. This year, mukhang wala siyang bagong pelikula. "Picky kasi si Arnold [Vegafria, his manager] sa roles na tinatanggap ko. Gusto niya, yung mabango yung roles. This year, walang bagay na role among those na inaalok sa akin," paliwanag ni Jay-R. First and foremost, musical artist pa rin siya. He's coming up with a Christmas album na iri-release next month. "Baka yung first single from the album, yung 'Winter Wonderland' or 'Christmas Song,' depende," sabi ni Jay-R. "Magsu-shoot na ako ng music video for any of the two songs. Iri-release ng Universal Records yung album, under my own label, which is Homeworkz Records." Inaalagaan naman siya ng GMA-7. Magse-seven years na siya rito. Hindi na siya binibitiwan sa SOP, at sa kasalukuyan ay tampok siya sa Dear Friend. Kasama si Jay-R sa concert ni Dionne Warwick sa October 2, at may duet sila na dapat abangan ng marami. For a while, na-link siya kay Kyla, pero wala naman daw yun. Friends lang talaga. Inamin niyang nakikipag-date siya kay Kryssa Mae Arrieta. "She's a girl, and she's a friend," natatawang sabi ni Jay-R nang tanungin namin kung girlfriend na nga ba niya ito. Every time na mag-e-expire ang contract ni Jay-R sa GMA-7, lumilitaw ang tsikang lilipat na siya sa ABS-CBN. "Pero, hindi naman totoo. Kasi, wala namang offer ang ABS-CBN. Hindi ko alam. I will stick with GMA, for as long as they are going to keep me. Pero, kung hindi na sila mag-renew ng renewal ng contract, I think that's the time na I have to leave GMA-7. So far, wala namang rason para iwan ko ang GMA. Jay-R believes in Christmas and enjoys its cheer and trimmings. At this time of the year, he cannot afford to be a Scrooge or a Grinch.

Jay-R celebrates the joyous season with an album, released by his own label Homeworkz Records, titled Holiday of Love.

"It is fulfilling," says the R&B singer of the happiness the Christmas album brings him. "I get to do my own music. I have control over everything (from the content to the arrangement). I put my heart into it. It gives me a different high once it is done."

With Jay-R's passion for music and anticipation of Christmastime, Holiday of Love describes what Christmas is to the singer-actor. It gives listeners musical feast during get-togethers, exchanging of gifts and noche buena. The repackaged album contains of 14 tunes, devoid of instrumentals. The real deal on Holiday of Love, however, is the repertoire which consists of Jay-R's "traditional and personal favorites."

He describes the merry season in O, Holy Night and Do You See What I See? and gives its true meaning in Give Love On Christmas Day. The listener will also be treated to new original songs in Tito Reny which Jay-R wrote himself, and Spread the Love, a collaboration with his sister Jhing. They show his vulnerable side.

Other songs that will put one in a Holiday mood are White Christmas, Sleigh Ride, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Intro (O Christmas Tree), Winter Wonderland, The Christmas Song, This Christmas, Santa Baby and The Little Drummer Boy.

How is Holiday of Love different from his previous album Christmas Away from Home? Jay-R does a cappella in O, Holy Night. Then he provides a jazzy and signature R&B touch in every ditty. Expect interesting sounds to each Christmas carol.

The album has the dominating sounds of guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. Making the album extra special are the vocals of Amber Davis, Kris Lawrence and Jay-R's sister Jhing.

"I have always liked Christmas the most from all the holidays," shares Jay-R on the album's notes. "I remember as a child I always managed to get everyone in my family a gift although I didn't have much money. It's amazing what you can do when you are inspired by your loved ones. I remember hearing Christmas songs in the middle of September and already getting that warm and cozy feeling inside. It would give me that holiday spirit and I would like to get excited because I knew Christmas was just around the corner."

That's what Jay-R wants to share with everyone come Dec. 25 and in the days leading to it.

To share his blessings, Jay-R will donate a portion from the album's proceeds to GMA Kapuso Foundation.

It is heartening to see that despite the hard times and particularly the dwindling cd sales Filipino artists are still determined to do their bit for the Christmas celebration with new albums. Martin Nievera and Claire de la Fuente got the bandwagon started. Then recently we got Jay-R’s Holiday of Love.

2008 turned out to be very special for Jay-R. His Soul in Love did not only sell a lot of cds. It also proved what an extraordinary vocalist he is. Listeners not only found his singing expressive, Jay-R was also able to achieve the difficult feat of giving his own spin to time tested soul ballads.

The experience of having a hit album while other artists are struggling to sell must have felt so rewarding that Jay-R decided to give something back. So he took out his Christmas cd from two years ago, Christmas Away From Home. He remixed and remastered the tracks. Then he added some new ones, did new packaging and put it out as Holiday of Love.

Do not make the mistake though of thinking of this as just some marketing gimmick to generate sales for an old product. Jay-R went out of his way to make the cd special. After all he made the time to arrange and record and do whatever he had to in between tapings for his comedy series LaLola and other commitments. Then he decided to donate proceeds from sales of Holiday of Love to GMA 7’s Kapuso Foundation.

It inspires when one hears of people striving to reach a worthy goal—like Jay-R who is intent on becoming as good a businessman as he is a singer.

The R&B Prince invited friends and media to the opening of his Ministop at Wilson St. in San Juan last September 30.

"I'm really business-minded eh," he said. "And I wanted something stable, something that's working already and I noticed that Ministop is growing rapidly so I wanted to be part of that success."

Not a newbie in entrepreneurship, Jay-R had had a taste of success and rough times in the field. "I had a club, Rock Candy, pero sumabog yun eh." Rock Candy, which was launched February of last year, was one of the casualties in the Glorietta blast of October 2007.

"Nadamay kami dun so ever since parang..., of course I wanted to go into business but I wanted to get out of the clubbing business. Medyo mahirap [kasi]... although we were doing very well [then], sumabog nga siya and it was kinda hard to get back," he revealed.

Jay-R added that another reason why he decided to veer away from ‘clubbing' ventures is the time factor. "[Considering I'm into] singing and acting, medyo mahirap dahil dapat kasi tutok itong mga club, dapat andun ka talaga. Compared to like this, mga Ministop, you just have to get somebody you trust, the manager, and then from time to time you just come in and supervise."

At present, Jay-R has 8 employees handling his Ministop business, "One manager, 2 assistant managers and 5 crew. Yung mga tao ko, tao ko talaga eh. It's kinda good ‘cause I trust them already."

He said that it took him four months to finally settle everything and get a franchise of the popular convenience store.

"This is actually my fourth business," Jay-R noted. "My first was my recording studio Homeworkz, which is in my house. [Then] of course with a studio, I had to follow it up with my record label. It's also called Homeworkz—Homeworkz Records. Tapos my third one is my events company, it's called Backhome Productions. We do ‘yung mga shows ko ganun and then my fourth one, Ministop."

Homeworkz, he added, will be releasing his Christmas album in November. "Tinatapos ko na lang, mga dalawang kanta na lang. There are 12 songs, may dalawang original and 10 classic Christmas songs [including] White Christmas and Christmas song."

On top of everything, Jay-R is also busy with "SOP, a new soap, La Lola with Eddie Garcia, Rhian Ramos and others. And there's Desperadas 2. Ang daming work, it's a blessing.

"And aside from all that, I'm producing three songs on Kyla's album. And then I'm also finishing World Wide Peace Record so you know, everyday talaga, every hour actually, may schedule."

Which is why he couldn't even remember the last movie he watched. "Tagal na. Ngayon walang time talaga. Ever since I started, everyday, may trabaho talaga."

Blessed with a lot of gigs and projects, Jay-R, it would seem, is also blessed with good genes. "Hindi ako tabain eh. Lahi kami ng payat eh kaya ganun. Swerte nga ako eh, daddy ko payat, mommy ko payat so..."

"'Pag may bench fashion show, I'm working out," he related. "And occasionally I work out. May gym din [kasi] sa bahay. The only thing lang eh nakakatamad din ‘pag ano, ‘pag maraming trabaho so you know occasionally [lang], when I'm feeling up to it. Konti. But most of the time hindi eh."

But he is health-conscious "sa pagkain. Like I don't eat the skin of chicken or I don't eat crispy pata, mga ganun. [But] I eat junk food definitely."

His idea of junk food is, "It would have to be pandesal with cheez whiz." Laughing, he added: "Well, sige, I like E-aji. And also, I just came from Davao and I bought a bunch of ube yema, sarap!"

Evidently, it's not dieting that occupies the singer-actor but fitting all his activities in his tight schedule. When he has the time, he makes sure that he plays "Basketball and hang out with friends, kwentuhan lang ganun."

The coming months may just be a little too busy for him. "But [on Christmas, December] 25, after the Film Fest, I'm leaving. The family, we're going to Frankfurt, Germany. So we're gonna meet up there and have our Christmas and New Year's there."

For now, Jay-R is busy putting in order all of his commitments which now includes his new convenience store.

Vj Iya is one of the freshest faces in the local showbiz and modelling industry. At 18, she already embarks on a singing stint too. Not content with her being an actress, game jock, TV host, model and VJ, Iya is set to take the music industry by storm with the release of her upcoming album from Regal Records.

Iya took singing professionally at an early age. She was inspired and influenced by her dad's fondness for karaoke. At 13, she has fronted for such stellar Filipino acts like Pops Fernandez, Martin Nievera, the Apo and Jaya in her hometown of Sydney, Australia. She came to the Philippines in 2002 and her career began in full swing.

She started with modelling endorsements for Kolours and Coca-Cola. She also appears in the soap opera "Walang Hanggan."

Her debut movie was "A Beautiful Life" with Dina Bonnevie, Amy Austria and Gloria Romero under the direction of a multi-award winning director Gil Portes.

Jay-R is the most promising male RnB phenomenon that ever hit the local music scene.

Jay-R, was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He was in college taking up Computer Engineering, at Devry University. Then he decided to go to the Philippines and fulfill his dream... to become a singer.

He was once a part of a group named FI (First Impression). The group consisted of 5 guys: Mike Gabriel, Alex Bacani, Jayr, Jimmy Muna (who came with Jay-R to Manila). When Mike, Owen and Alex went their separate ways, Jay-R and Jimmy continued the group by adding another talented singer named Kris Lawrence. They would do gigs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Michigan.

Jay-R also belonged to a band that was lead by his Uncle, Bobby Sillona. The band was called The Howlers. Being part of his uncle’s band was a huge part in Jay-R’s career... it taught him the ways of the stage!

He is currently signed under Universal Records. His first album, aptly titled ‘Game Face’, has 12 tracks on it, containing 2 original Tagalog songs: “Kaibigan”, written by his sister, Jhing Sillona; and “Bakit Pa Ba?” written by Vehnee Saturno. I FELL OFF FOR A WHILE. I WAS SO BUSY ON MY CLUB ROCK CANDY. SO I DECIDED TO GET BACK IN THE GAME AND START MAKING MUSIC AGAIN. THAT'S WHY IT TAKES ME FOREVER TO DO ANOTHER ALBUM. I ALWAYS GET SIDETRACKED WITH DIFFERENT KINDS OF WORK. IM NOT COMPLAINING THOUGH, BECAUSE AT LEAST I GOT TO EXPERIENCE A DIFFERENT KIND OF SHOW BIZ. ITS A TRIP HOW MUCH I'VE LEARNED SINCE I MOVED OUT HERE. I GUESS THAT'S WHERE I GOT THE COURAGE TO DO A BUSINESS THAT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT (THE CLUB BUSINESS). BUT ITS ALL GOOD BECAUSE ITS SOMETHING NEW TO LEARN FOR ME. ITS KINDA STRESSFUL, BUT I KNOW THE KNOWLEDGE THAT I WILL GAIN FROM THIS WILL BE WORTH IT. ANYWAY, MORAL OF THE STORY IS THAT IM BORED RIGHT NOW. HAHA! JUST PLAYIN.
